Socialist Worker: LA's charter school giveaway

This increasing corporate control of schools is infuriating! The loss of one of our last public spaces is at stake. Everywhere the arm of capital seems to dictate! If there ever was a time to rethink public education policies related to charter schools, it is now!

Just How Much Media Do We Really Need?

Left class tonight excited for a new term and more analysis and discussion on media literacy.  Naturally, switched the TV on as I collapsed after the day.  CNN featured a 2 hour (turned into 4 hours) coverage of the Michael Jackson Funeral.  70 days after MJ died, he is finally, at least for the day, laid to rest in a memorial park.  For 4 hours (I actually worked during that time), I didn't hear how the fires in LA were, the two hurricanes bearing down on the Americas...where are they?  did anyone die in Iraq?  Afghanistan?

Ribbons at the bottom declared that Dame Elizabeth Taylor was there, Jackson's mother was visibly upset, and that ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley appeared emotional.

Oh Boy (or Girl?)

One of the big news items over the last couple of weeks has been the various arguments and intrigue attached to Caster Semenya's status as 'woman'. Without wanting to get into the details about whether or not she should hold the world record, be stripped of her title and subjected to various medical 'tests' to verify her gender credentials, the scenario that the world's media played out for all to see about these otherwise normally private aspects of ones identity brings to the fore the significance that gender and sex hold in our contemporary world.

CBC ad product placement

Interesting story about cbc getting into the product placment business as part of their strategy to counteract continued government funding cuts.  I guess nothing new (all networks do it, right!). That said, it is discouraging to see cbc headed this direction.  As the government cuts funding, what alternative do they have?

Arne Duncan on Face the Nation

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan was on Face the Nation this morning. . .and the interview highlights the huge problem we all face as we call for significant school reform. . .Duncan was wrong on nearly everything he said and Bob Schieffer just smiled. . .Duncan called for national standards, as if making statements about narrow expectations for everyone can work, as if we haven't been saying this for a century. . .Charter schools that work for everyone, merit pay. . .NCLB just needs better funding!. . the mantras are stale and not based in any evidence we know about the facts of school. . .Will we ever experince a political leader who knows her/his field? Who will say what we know is accurate?. . .I am skeptical. . .School failures are a reflection of social failures. .

Welcome to the library. Say goodbye to the books.

In reading this story I had to acknowledge the obvious classist preoccupations with technological advancement. What is the true impact when hundreds (thousands?) of schools across the world don't have libraries? Certainly, the funding doesn't exist to digitize entire library collections.
