Trends and Issues in Jamaican Education

In this photo,
you see a group of teachers at Holy Childhood School in Kingston, Jamaica in October, 2008. These teachers are participants in the Western Carolina University - Jamaican program....the university has offered this program to Jamaican teachers since the early 1980s. All of these teachers hold two-year diplomas from teachers' colleges in Jamaica and they are seeking their undergraduate degrees in education with a focus on special education. The course that was offerred to them in October was a "Trends and Issues in Jamaican Education" course and I selected the edited book by Kincheloe and Steinberg, 19 Questions, because of its relevance to the issues faced by teachers working in the urban, inner city schools of Kingston, Jamaica. These students loved the book. Teachers working in a post-colonial, third world country intuitively understand the powerfulness of critical theory and its meaningfulness to the issues they face in a third world country struggling to resolve its problems and find a place in the 21st century global economy. At the end of the course, the books were highlighted throughout and
"dog-eared"; they were delighted to pose for this picture so that i could send it to Joe and convey to him how much they had enjoyed it.
