definitions of critical pedagogy
Hi
I'm Petar, doing a PhD in critical e-learning. I've been extensively using Freire, Illich, Kincheloe, McLaren etc. in my work. This website has been really helpful so far, so I thought that I might look for help from fellow researchers.
My methodological choice was to divide the research into 3 parts: politics of e-learning, based on various authors; e-learning technologies, which is mostly based on Illich; and pedagogy, where I 'd like to reconceptualize Freire in the digital age. The first two parts are finished, and I 'm just about to start working on the third one.
Is there any good work around on Freire in the digital age? Could you please post titles, links, or even e-mail some sources?
Thanks a mill!
Petar

Hi,
Hi Petar,
Your dissertation sounds exciting and timely. I do not know any source directly related to e-learning but i know that Freire has some encounters with Seymon Paperts who was one of the pioneer of computer based learning and creator of a programing language called LOGO.
Here is one video to start with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPVweGFj_q8
I know Freire has some other discussion with Paperts. If i come across anything i will send it to you. If you find more info i would ask you share with us here too. I think this topic is very important.
Also i would look at his latest books and their preface written by Macedo or McLaren. They might talk to him about e-learning and wrote something there...
Cheers!

Hi Petar
Have you seen the work of Randal Pinkett, which originates in Papert's work and is underpinned by Freire? He synthesizes social and cultural constructionism into a theory he calls sociocultural constructionism. Pinkett argues that “individual and community development are reciprocally enhanced by independent and shared constructive activity that is resonant with both the social setting that encompasses a community of learners, as well as the cultural identity of the learners themselves.” Pinkett’s work in the development of a community technological infrastructure in Camfield Estates inBoston , Massachusetts , engaged the residents of this low to medium socio-economic community as active participants in using technology to create connections and relationships between residents, local associations and institutions such as libraries, schools, and local businesses so it would be relevant to your research in e-learning I think. These links might help:

Good luck

I also found the link for Pinkett's dissertation, which explicitly links his research to Freire....

This is certainly an interesting read.

Digital praxis
This sounds exactly like what I'm looking to engage. I would love to connect with you - and the other commenters above.
My problem is, I've got connection with all the greatest edu geeks around but little connection with the critical pedagogy community (thus my interest in Freire Project). I am currently trying to facilitate connection between these two worlds - from the geek side of the equation :)
To this end, I created a NING group with the following purpose:
"Ideas and skills collective for educators interested in critical pedagogy, social justice education and open source collaborative works."

Note: I am new to the Freire Project so forgive me if I'm unfamiliar with some of the figures and works. This is part of my learning.
Hi
My doctoral dissertation used a web-assisted transformative action research methodology to develop a web-assisted transformative pedagogy. In the dissertation I discuss the use of web-based learning environment to challenge homophobia, heterosexism and heteronormativity in schools. The abstract and full dissertation is available at:

Hi Tim,
I'm particularly interested in web-assisted transformative pedagogy that you write about in your thesis. Have you written anything else on this topic? The WATP terminology and framework are very useful to me.
Thanks,
Richard
Web Assisted Transformative Pedagogy
Dear Richard,
To date I have only written about Web Assisted Transformative Pedagogy in the dissertation.

Hi Everyone
Thanks a lot for your help! I am so sorry that I did not ee your replies earlier; I simply asked this in so many places that I forgot about this one. Promise iz will not happen in the future!
@Ilhan: Thanks a lot for your compliments and for the links. I do extensively read Freire's conversations with Macedo and McLaren and find a lot of inspiration there, but that is not what I am looking for. Papert seems interesting, so I will check him out a bit more closely and get back in touch.
@Anne: Pinkett is a wee bit closer to what I was looking for. Opens some fresh ideas; already managed to extract few important things from his theories. Thanks a lot!
@Richard: You made my day with the dissertation! I printed it and read carefully; foun many useful things. Just great!
@Mel: Better late than never... I just requested membership to your website, so we'll be able to get in touch.
@Tim: Your dissertation is a very interesting read – I have to look closer and I might get in touch.
Thanks for your help, everyone! Now I'm in deep trouble: reached almost the end of my writing, and just saw so many fresh ideas... You gave me a good portion of food for thought!
Cheers
Petar
